At the Center of Innovation: the International University of Central Asia as a Platform for the Professional Growth of English Teachers
The English Linguistics Program at the International University of Central Asia hosted a seminar on innovative teaching methods. The event was attended by over 50 participants and focused on interactive and inclusive approaches to teaching English with elements of social-emotional learning (SEL).
Modern education is experiencing turbulent changes – new challenges emerge daily, forcing educators to rethink their teaching methods. In these circumstances, it is crucial for both university professors and school teachers to continually engage in professional self-development and skill enhancement.
A key role in this process is played by special centers, which can be called "platforms" where professionals can exchange experiences, discuss current issues, and acquire new knowledge.
One such platform once again became the International University of Central Asia (IUCA), which hosted a pedagogical skills seminar on October 19, 2024, titled "Innovative Approaches to Teaching English: Interactive and Inclusive Methods with SEL Elements." The event was attended by more than 50 people, including IUCA professors, students, and graduate students, as well as teachers from educational institutions in Chui region and Bishkek.
The seminar was opened by IUCA Vice President Ivan Ninenko and the Head of the English Linguistics Program, Alena Maksakova, who wished the participants a productive session and many new professional discoveries.
One of the highlights of the seminar was the presentation by Professor Lance Tillman, who teaches in the English Linguistics Program at IUCA. He shared his vision of the four key characteristics of a successful student. With over 15 years of experience in higher education in Kyrgyzstan, Professor Tillman delivered an inspiring speech that resonated strongly with all attendees.
Monica Zhang, a professor in the English Linguistics Program at IUCA and a Fulbright Scholar, led an interactive training session, where participants explored various methods for actively engaging students in language learning.
Leila Serikova, also a professor in the English Linguistics Program at IUCA, introduced participants to the latest educational paradigm – Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). During a practical session, participants discussed and tested a variety of teaching strategies based on this approach.
Anastasia Kuzheleva, a graduate of the English Linguistics Program and the Head of the Translation Studies Program at IUCA’s Humanities and Technical College, led a session focused on the inclusive aspects of foreign language teaching, which garnered great interest from the participants.
The seminar at IUCA was a shining example of how educational institutions can serve as powerful platforms for professional growth and experience exchange.
It is noteworthy that participation in the seminar was completely free, further emphasizing IUCA's commitment to social responsibility in supporting the professional development of educators. The university continues to make a significant contribution to both regional development and the improvement of the education system in Kyrgyzstan as a whole.
